Marit Stiles and the Ontario NDP: On your side to help you pay for groceries

TORONTO - Ontario NDP Leader Marit Stiles announced the NDP’s Monthly Grocery Rebate to help put money back in people’s pockets and offset the rising cost of groceries under Doug Ford. The rebate amount is based on how much the cost of essential groceries like milk, bread and vegetables have increased under Ford.

To fight sky-high grocery prices, Stiles is bringing new measures to keep big box grocery stores accountable to the people.

“After 7 long years of Doug Ford, groceries cost more than ever. Every week, families are forced to make difficult decisions about whether they can afford their kids’ favourite snack, or if they should put it back on the shelf. Some people are avoiding fresh fruits and vegetables. Some have to skip beef or chicken.

Seven years of Doug Ford have cost you. So, we’re giving some of that increase back to help you afford food. The rebate amount in our program is based on how much the cost of essential groceries like milk, bread and vegetables have increased under Ford.

As Premier, I will put money back in your pockets so you can afford groceries and I’ll bring more transparency to grocery prices.”

The Ontario NDP will:

  • Create a Monthly Grocery Rebate:To help families offset the rise in grocery costs, we will provide a recurring monthly grocery rebate based on household income and family size. At a time when people are feeling anxious about their budgets, the Monthly Grocery Rebate will give stable relief to millions of households.
  • Stop Price Gouging:We’ll bring transparency to grocery prices by forcing big retailers to publicly post when they raise prices more than two per cent in a week. We’ll crack down on price fixing and other unfair practices by establishing a new watchdog to enforce competition laws and keep food prices fair.

The rebate amount is calculated relative to how much the price of a basket of essential food items has increased under Ford. We’re giving some of that increase back to people to help them afford food.
